Cookbooks for Fresh Inspiration

Summertime brings with it the desire to cook less and eat fresh. By which we mean, stews and roasted dishes — anything involving hours at the stove — becomes about as appealing as going to the beach with your winter coat on. Still, we love our food, and summer brings an abundance that is downright inspirational. So what to do with all this fresh stuff? Well Lula’s Pantry can help you out in this department, as we carry the perfect cookbooks for summer. Want to know how to enjoy a meat-free but taste-filled season? Try out the recipes from the Market Vegetarian cookbook. Ready to enhance your skills at your outdoor grill? (But don’t want to spend hours doing so?) Then check out the new cookbook, Easy Grilling. The title says it all. And finally, the amazing chef, Marcus Samuelsson, has a cookbook called The New American Table, described as “An affectionate, thoroughly diverse tribute to the modern American table.” Chef Samuelsson is a master at bringing together classic clean Scandinavian flavors and techniques with our American desire for big flavors.

So no need to fire up the stove for hours on end — just fire up your imagination with these (and more) cookbooks, available at Lula’s Pantry!

New England at its Best

The summer season brings visitors to Rockport from all over the world. And it seems that each one them, understandably, wants to capture a little of New England to take home with them. Sidehill Farm jams from Vermont provide the perfect taste of New England to take away from a visit to a region so rich in culinary pleasures. The only downside is that these jars of jam often don’t make it past being slathered on a piece of fresh bread and enjoyed back at the Bed & Breakfast or hotel. Or in the rental car. Or anywhere else as a fresh-tasting on-the-go snack. Inventive flavor combinations and small-batch production make Sidehill Farm jams the perfect souvenir of life in New England. And the best part is, this holds true whether you’re a yearly visitor or a year-round local.

Cool as a…Q Cumber?

According to the site The World’s Healthiest Foods, “The phrase ‘cool as a cucumber’ is not without merit. This vegetable’s high water content gives it a very unique moist and cooling taste.” And this is only the beginning of the cucumber’s benefits. Consumption of the humble cucumber, related to squash, is good for everything from your skin to your blood pressure.

Now, a new beverage has entered the scene that captures that elusive “cool” taste found in the cucumber itself. (And this drink has a clever pun for a name to boot.) Mr. Q Cumber is an all-natural soda made with real cane sugar and cucumber extract. The heat of summer is the perfect time to take a sip (or many, many sips) from a bottle of Mr. Q Cumber, a great counterpart to enjoying a day at the beach. Cool as a cucumber indeed.

A Picnic to Remember

When packing for a picnic or for any meal out-of-doors, convenience is a top priority. Here at Lula’s Pantry, we feature products that make sure you don’t have to sacrifice style for the sake of convenience. Beautiful melamine plates that are hard-working and practically unbreakable, a delightfully colorful Alessi server (just look at that charming boat shape) and finally, the star of the show: single use cloth napkins. Yes, you read that right. Cloth napkins that are every bit as convenient as their paper counterparts yet give a nod to the feeling of quality that only real linens can provide.  So pack your basket, go forth into the wild (or just your backyard) and picnic in style!

Recipe: Summer Tomato & Roasted Corn Salad

Tin Mustard at Lula's Pantry

Enjoy this recipe using Tin Mustard, found on the shelves of Lula’s Pantry — perfect for summertime meals:

Summer Tomato & Roasted Corn Salad

6 Medium sized Salad friendly Tomatoes

4 ears of Corn

2 Yellow Onions

4 Tablespoons of chopped Mint leaves

4 Tablespoons of chopped Cill leaves

3 Tablespoons of Tin Mustard

2 Tablespoons of Cider Vinegar

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Salt & Pepper

1. Sice onions in thin slivers and saute on medium heat with olive oil until it’s nicely caramelized. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Be patient, it’s worth it!

2. Cut the corn kernels off the corn and saute in a high heat pan with olive oil until kernels have some color. Slice the tomatoes in sixths or good bite size pieces.

4. Make a quick vinaigrette by mixing Tin Mustard, vinegar and a tablespoon of olive oil and a touch of salt and pepper.

5. Mix the tomatoes with the corn and oinions in a bowl and add most of the vinaigrette and herbs, reserve some to be added on top of the salad. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

6. Serve on a large serving plate or individual plates and dress with the remaining vinaigrette and herbs. Finish with a few cracks of fresh black pepper.

7. Serve with grilled foods or enjoy by itself. A nice slice of grilled or toasted crusty bread works great to sop up the juices!
